Personal Contract Brief

The photographs were taken of Paula in hired costumes for the Personal Contract Painting brief. She chose to do a self-portrait series about personal choice over destiny in creating ones life. Using the traditional tarot card format, Paula used the original meanings arranged to read the way she wished her life to turn out. The final images were impasto-printed onto canvas then colour-stained with oil paint. For her main painting, she chose one image and adapted it to life size. Read more about this work in the Nelson Mail.

Final images were approx. 11x15cm each.

Atmospheric Painting Brief
These two paintings were created with specific techniques designed to set the scene of the work over the subject matter. ‘Orange Roughy’ was painted in a smooth and serene style in contrast to ‘Chez Eelco’ - a painterly, busy look with visible brushstrokes.

The Readymade

This brief looked at the use of 3D materials and their associated meanings, juxtaposed together to determine a new meaning. The father of modern art - Marcel du Champ, created the Readymade in a response to art and theory. He created an intellectual departure point in the way that people viewed art in galleries, and what was considered ‘art’. In this particular brief, Paula humorously questioned Marcel du Champs ‘Fountain’ by placing a copy of his work in a frame on the wall. A tripod was set up with two toilet rolls as viewing binoculars that focused on the picture. With one roll being budget grade and the other high quality, Paula questions whether the art public is required to have specific knowledge in order to understand this form of art.
